Lt. Col. Loring Barclay Smith, USAF Ret.

Lt. Col. Loring Barclay Smith, USAF Ret., died on 23 July 2010. He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, 5 November 2010 at 11:00 a.m. (Section 64, grave #861). Loring was a life member of Clan Barclay International and one of its founding members. A World War II veteran, he graduated from the Army Air Corps flying school at Turner Field, Georgia, on 12 December 1941 and served until his retirement at HQ Air Defense Command in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on 31 July 1965. From his arrival in the South Pacific in February 1942, through the Solomon Islands and Guadalcanal with the 67th Pursuit Squadron, then with the 347th Fighter Group at Tontouta Air Base, New Caledonia, and then on to HQ 13th Air Force Fighter Command at Efate on Vanuatu Island, he served as a fighter pilot, a senior controller, a group operations officer, and an interceptor officer until his return stateside in August 1943. He served in various capacities until demobilization in 1946. As a civilian, he went to work for American Airlines until recalled to service in August 1950. The officers and members of Clan Barclay extend their sympathy to Loring’s family members: daughter, Wendy Barclay Thornton , granddaughters, Diana Lynne Dwyer and Sandra Ann Denham, and great-grandchildren, Sean Barclay Denham and Kathryn Grace Denham.

Slate of Officers Announced

The Clan Barclay Nominating Committee has submitted its recommendation for the slate of officers to serve in 2011/12. This slate will be included on the AGM agenda for approval, with balloting in October. As per the Clan Barclay By-Laws, the slate is included in the Spring issue of The Barclay Broadside and via this website posting.

Annual General Meeting August 21

The Annual General Meeting of Clan Barclay International will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday 21 August during the 26th Annual Scottish Festival and Highland Games in Amherst, New York. Clan Barclay has been chosen as the honored clan for this event which will be held at the Amherst Museum, 3755 Tonawanda Creek Road, Amherst, New York from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is $10.00 for adults; children 14 years of age under are free. There will be no charge for parking. All Barclays/Barkleys are welcome to attend.

Clan Barclay DNA Project Established

Clan Barclay DNA project was established in 2008 and exists to support genealogical research and the linking of Barclay [Barkley, Berclay, Bercley, Berklay] families worldwide. This project is available for a fee and is provided by FamilyTreeDNA. Participation in the DNA project is open to all interested individuals, whether or not they are members of Clan Barclay International.
