The Barclay Genealogical Database

Clan Barclay was convened in Florida in 1980 as Clan Barclay Society, USA. It was reincorporated in 1994 in Virginia as Clan Barclay International, Ltd. Its mission is to foster the spirit of kinship and pride existing among all who have Barclay ancestry, regardless of spelling. The Clan Barclay Genealogist established the Barclay Genealogical Database in 1992 to provide a clearinghouse for Barclay family data and history. The genealogist is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, Scotland, a member of the Association of One-Name Studies, the National Genealogical Society, and the Association of Professional Genealogists. She holds memberships in the National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland.

Although the Barclay One-Name Study is a project of Clan Barclay, participation in the genealogical database  does not constitute membership in Clan Barclay. There are several benefits of membership. Membership information is found on the Clan website or is available from:

Purpose

  1. To bring together individuals and groups of people who collect family data about all references, branches, spellings and occurrences of the surname Barclay.
  2. To extract, or have electronic access to all entries of the surname Barclay and its variations from records in the United States, Scotland, England, Ireland, Canada and other locations as applicable.
  3. To maintain the official archival repository at The Ellen Payne Odum Library, Moultrie, Georgia.
  4. To publish original or reprint materials relating to the history and genealogy of the Barclay surname.
  5. To promote genealogical research, specifically Barclay surname research, and to assist researchers.

Member Services

Participation in the Study is free. Copies of information contained in the database is provided free. The Genealogist reserves the ability to charge 15¢ per page for large files.

  • Specific family lineages or information on specific individuals.
  • Names and address of correspondents researching specific lines
  • Historical information about Scottish Barclay families.
  • Names and addresses of genealogists who provide similar services for other surnames.

Researchers participate in the Study by providing information in any format including family group sheets, pedigree charts, abstracts, extractions, photographs and photocopies of original materials. GEDCOM files, Family Tree Maker or Master Genealogist files are accepted by mail or by e-mail attachment. Collateral line information is welcomed as an important part of the Study.
